Upcoming River Trips

HCC Trips:
Date:
Friday, July 30, 2010
Title:
South Llano River
Inclusive Dates:
7/30/2010-8/01/2010
Description:
I am planning to paddle (and maybe fish) the South Llano River out of Junction, TX on Saturday, July 31st. If interested in joining me, please make your own accommodations in the Junction, TX, area for this weekend. You might try Morgan Shady Park or the South Llano River State Park, the KOA, or any of the motels in the area.

This trip is NOT geared toward newbies! You MUST be able to maneuver your boat well, and have experience avoiding strainers and going through small rapids.

You will need to have some rope attached to one end of your boat, carry an extra paddle in the boat with you, have a PFD and whistle, and pack a lunch and plenty of water/drinks. Some sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat will also be a good choice.

I will send more info to those who respond as interested.
Skill Level:
Intermediate: Knowledge of basic whitewater safety, self-rescue and rescue such as retrieving a pinned boat. Able to capture small eddies, run Class 2 rapids confidently, but challenged by Class 3 rapids such as Cottonseed on the San Marcos at say 300-400 cfs.

Title:
Upstream on the Lower Pecos River
Inclusive Dates:
August 14-18, 2010
Description:
The main reason for going upstream is time requirements.  This will be a 5 day trip, Sat. Aug 14 to Wed. Aug 18.

This will be a moderately difficult trip with walking the canoes/kayaks upstream being the most difficult.  Expect class I and II rapids in this section of the Pecos.  We will paddle upstream to Painted Canyon and attempt to paddle as far as Lewis Canyon.
Skill Level:
Novice: Confidently execute basic strokes plus ability to manage high wind and high waves typically experienced on Lake Charlotte or Sheldon reservoir, can maneuver the boat on moving water plus familiarity with eddy turns, ferrying and surfing in Class 2 rapids typically found on the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers. Able to read the river and identify the eddy line.

Buffalo Bayou with the Sierra Club

August 29, 2010

Join us as we explore a part of the bayou that you don’t normally hear about- downstream of Allens Landing. We will explore Japhets Creek, Hidalgo Park and go as far downstream as Homeland Security will let us.

(Spearheaded by the Japhet Creek Community Association, Japhet Creek has undergone tremendous changes in the last few years. Japhet Creek has once again become the pristine, native environment home to migrating songbirds, aquatic turtles, swamp rabbits and a pair of red-tailed hawks that nest nearby! This write-up was from the BuffaloBayou.org website).

Beginner: Familiarity with basic strokes and can make the boat go straight on flat water typically experienced on Armand Bayou, can maneuver the boat on slowly moving water, is aware of basic river safety and can confidently avoid hazards and strainers frequently experienced on Texas' Colorado River or the Buffalo Bayou at a modest flow rate.
