Date: July 14, 2010
Recorder: John Ohrt
Minutes: HOUSTON CANOE CLUB GENERAL MEETING
Bayland Park Community Center

Commodore Ken McDowell called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone to the Houston Canoe Club.

Officers were introduced. New acting officers are Joe Coker as Vice Commodore and Greg Walker as Webmaster. Paul Woodcock introduced and welcomed visitors. Joe Coker gave the Safety Minute.

The program speaker was Gina Donovan of the Audubon Society. Her program was on Birds and Bottomlands of the Neches River. She presented beautiful photos of the wildlife of the Upper and Lower Neches, and described her favorite sections using maps from her book Neches River Users Guide. Also discussed were the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge and other works aimed at protecting this wild river.

Acting Fleet Captain Ken McDowell gave the trip report. Past trips included the Colorado River at Bastrop, Lake Pass, Stubblefield Lake, and the Week of Rivers in North Carolina. Ken also discussed a planned “Introduction to Water Safety Class” for club members. It would be an instructional class and a follow up to the trip leader class at Hidalgo Falls which was a big success. Anyone interested needs to contact Joe Coker.

Joe Coker is also heading up a "Getting To Know You" paddle event to bring HCC members together with COE (Corps of Engineers) personnel working on the Wallisville Paddling Trail project. Anyone who would like to help, please contact Joe.

John Ohrt reviewed the minutes of the June general meeting which were accepted. Harmon Everett gave a financial report.

The website was discussed. The current website has become difficult to maintain and will get worse in the future. It is proposed that the club use Club Express to manage and maintain our website. The cost is projected to be a yearly fee of $150 and $4.80 per club member (a family would be one club member). A test site has been set up for club members to check out at thcc.clubexpress.com. Please check it over and give any comments and suggestions to Ken McDowell or Greg Walker.

Ken is planning to introduce a motion for discussion at the August meeting, and for voting at the September meeting, that we switch to the Club Express site. This will give everyone plenty of time to look at the new site. It was brought up in the discussion that the Club needs to have a presence on Facebook.

John Bartos spoke for the Conservation Committee that a possible dam on the Navasota River appears to be dead.

The Membership Enhancement Task Force is delivering ACA safety brochures with the club logo to area paddling and outdoor outlets to promote membership. If you would like to help deliver some, please contact the Commodore.

The meeting was adjourned.

Please contact HCC's recorder, John Ohrt, if there are any omissions or corrections.
