Houston Canoe Club
General Membership Meeting
May 10th, 2017
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: John Ohrt
The Commodore, Honey Leveen, called the meeting to order and welcomed all attendees. She introduced the club officers and announced that Boatswain Paul Woodcock is in the hospital recovering from an accident. She encouraged everyone to sign the two get well cards for Paul.

The Vice Commodore moved to accept the minutes of the previous meeting, and the motion was seconded and passed.

The Commodore announced that this year's Christmas party will be held on December 16th at the same location as last year.

Harmon Everett presented the Safety Minute by reviewing past Safety Minutes.

The Purser gave a financial report that we are in good shape.

Eight guests were introduced.

The Fleet Captain gave her report. The club has so far this year paddled 1,176 miles on 11 trips. Past trips included the Buffalo National River, Carpenter's Bayou / Sheldon Lake, and the lower Guadalupe above Tivoli. Upcoming trips (see the club website) include the San Bernard River, wear your life jacket to work day, and a three day Memorial Day camp-out trip on the Colorado River.

The Vice Commodore spoke about upcoming programs, and asked for ideas for future programs. She then introduced Lynne Andrus, once from Houston but now from Austin, who first spoke in support of canoe and kayak instruction and that she is willing to teach people either one at whatever level they want or need. Lynne then gave a power point presentation on sea kayaking in the Channel Islands of California using a chartered sailboat as a base, and sea kayaking and sailing in the Windward Islands of the Caribbean.

The Commodore adjourned the meeting.

Board Meeting
May 3rd, 2017
Bayland Park Community Center
Recorder: Frank Ohrt
The Commodore called the meeting to order. All officers were present, except the Newsletter Editor. The Purser reported that we are in line with our annual budget. After some discussion, it was agreed that the club was unlikely to find a financial instrument that would give a better return than our current CD.

The Fleet Captain noted the totals of club trip miles paddled so far. She and the Purser discussed filing trip reports with the ACA, and said that the ACA insurance person seemed to be more engaged than the previous person. She then announced that Tom Douglas would be in charge of the Artist Boat event in Galveston in June.

The Vice-commodore said that she had figured out how to make the club’s computer projector work better, and that we therefore didn’t need to buy a new one. She discussed the purchase of books for speaker gifts, and requested ideas for future speakers. Various possibilities were discussed.

The Boatswain reported that HCC has 154 members. Kent Walters reported that Ann Clark, a new member, did very well on his Buffalo River trip. He and the Fleet Captain discussed website database reporting.

It was agreed to limit the time devoted to the Safety Minute at the membership meetings.

There was a discussion of when, how, and to what extent the club should use it’s funds for education. The can was once again kicked down the road.

The Purser noted some possible sites for the annual club picnic.

The Commodore called the meeting to a close.
