"It's Not Dead Yet" (Houston, TX)
"It’s a pointless, wasteful, ill-conceived, and maybe illegal project to rip up and raze trees and plants and wildlife habitat, dig up the banks, plug up tributaries, dredge and reroute the channel along one of the last natural stretches of Buffalo Bayou in Houston... And after almost three years of adamant public opposition, the Harris County Flood Control District is still promoting the project..."

"South Carolina Legal Decision Protects Right To Float!" (South Carolina)
"Paddlers have successfully helped to defend the public right to float rivers and streams in South Carolina. In a decision released late last week, a South Carolina court rejected an attempt to privatize a section of the South Fork of the Saluda River known as Blythe Shoals. The Court ruled that the entire river – rapids and all – is navigable and shall remain open to recreational paddling..."

"Nearly 1,500 Float Down participants land in Canada" (Port Huron, MI)
"As they floated under the Blue Water Bridge, Gabrielle Satryb and her friends looked up to see the enchanting structure – a highlight of the Port Huron Float Down along the St. Clair River – before realizing they were unexpectedly headed toward the Canadian shore. After strong winds blew Float Down participants off course Sunday afternoon many landed on foreign soil..."

"How Aging Complicates the Wilderness Experience"
"Through my thirties and early forties I was feeling and looking pretty damned good. People would say that I looked 10 years younger. Then this year people suddenly stopped being surprised that I was 43. I didn’t just slide a few years; I instantly started looking my actual age. I gained a decade all at once..."

"Big Thicket Toll Road Proposal" (Beaumont, TX)
"A proposal for a ten-mile toll road from north Beaumont to Vidor has sparked concerns over the economic feasibility of the project and the impacts it will have on local communities and natural resources. There are many problems and many unanswered questions, according to civic groups opposing the project.  As proposed, the controversial 105 Toll Road would cross a portion of the Big Thicket National Preserve and would require a new bridge over the Neches River..."

"Cool Off with Geology Classes on the Bayou" (Houston, TX)
"You may think it’s way too hot to go outside. But it’s actually much cooler down on the bayou, thanks to the water and the shade from overhanging trees. So now is the perfect time (unless it’s raining) to cool off and learn about the amazing geology of one of the last natural stretches of our 18,000-year-old Buffalo Bayou as it flows past Memorial Park..."

"The Singing Man of Boquillas, Dies" (Boquillas, Mexico)
"An iconic figure of the West Texas borderlands has died.  Victor Valdez of Boquillas, Mexico was beloved by many for his singing that often welcomed visitors to his small town on the Rio Grande.  He was a lifelong resident of Boquillas, a small Mexican town just across the river from Big Bend National Park that’s been a low-key tourist destination for decades. Valdez was famous for his charming rendition of the classic “Cielito Lindo”, which he’d sing for tourists arriving to his town as they slowly rowed across the river..."
