The water safari has been a summer tradition since 1963. This 260-mile race follows the San Marcos and Guadalupe Rivers through the Texas gulf plains to Seadrift, a shrimping village on San Antonio Bay. The only form of propulsion is by human muscle. All food and equipment must be on the boats. Water and ice are the only allowable stops. There are many obstacles – snakes, bugs, bees and hornets, rapids, strainers and portages and of course, no escape from the summer sun.

Margaret and her partner finished 5th overall and 2nd in their class (USCA – C2) with a time of 50:02. Only 18 boats finished in 1982. Margaret is going to share with us her experience with the Texas Water Safari – from training and equipment, nutrition and lack of sleep, and her and her partner’s successful finish!

We will start the program with a short video on the race.

This race has been billed as the “World’s Toughest Boat Race”. It is usually run annually on the second Saturday of June

Be sure to set this date aside on your calendar, then come out and support your club.
