Buffalo Bayou Park
Oct. 3, 2015
by
Linda Gorski

Several HCC members were on hand for the grand opening of the Buffalo Bayou Park on Saturday, October 3. Sponsored by the Buffalo Bayou Partnership, the day featured numerous activities including food, games, an adventure playground, a Prairie Walk, entertainment and speakers who highlighted architecture, landscaping, art and history along the Bayou. One of those speakers was our very own Louis Aulbach who gave an informative talk about the history of the portion of the Bayou near the new Lost Lake complex on Allen Parkway at Dunlavy Street. Louis is the author of the highly acclaimed book “Buffalo Bayou: an Echo of Houston’s Wilderness Beginnings” which is a virtual canoe trip along Houston’s most important waterway from its headwaters on Willow Fork, west of Katy to the Ship Channel.

Best news for members of the Houston Canoe Club is that we were able to scope out the new canoe launch at Lost Lake. Canoers and kayakers can drive their vehicles to a drop off point at the top of the trail down to the boat launch, then the carry to the sandy banks of the bayou is about 40 yards (and a staircase).

Located in the new visitor's center at Lost Lake, Bayou City Adventures has the concession for renting kayaks, paddles and PFDs to paddle the Bayou. The group will also provide guided tours of the Bayou, bike rentals bike tours and transportation. Check out their website at bayoucityadventures.org or call them at 713-538-7433.
