"Kayaking boy, 9, reels in shark off Galveston Island" (Galveston, TX)
"A boy and his dad caught a beast of a fish Sunday in Galveston, and they've got the incredible footage to prove it. Kevin Stevens and his 9-year-old son, Hunter, go on regular fishing trips together. Sometimes they catch redfish, flounder, drums or alligator gar. Other times, it gets a bit more exciting. The beach was crowded Sunday as the pair climbed into their kayak and headed out into the gulf. Before long, Hunter was reeling in a blacktip shark..."

"Woods surrounding nude beach to be closed" (Mazomanie, WI)
"Nudists from around the country have flocked to a section of soft, sandy Wisconsin River shoreline for decades, confident police and prosecutors won't go after them for leaving their Bermudas and bikinis behind. But the fun doesn't stop at volleyball and sunbathing — many people are slipping off into the woods for sex... Bender, who ran a canoe rental business on the river, filed a lawsuit in 2001 to force the DNR to make beach-goers put their clothes on. She said nudists had sex around the beach, wandered onto her property and waded out into the river and exposed themselves as her customers paddled by, causing people to avoid the area and hurting her business..."

"Outside Magazine: Adventurers of the Year" (Congo River, Africa)
"If we had known how dangerous these rapids were, we wouldn’t have taken them on," says South African expedition leader Steve Fisher. Working with Americans Rush Sturges and Tyler Bradt and Canadian Benny Marr, Fisher spent four days in western Congo last October running the Congo River’s Inga Rapids, the world’s largest by volume. “It was easily the closest I’ve ever come to dying,” Fisher says. With whirlpools 40 feet across, 20-foot waves, and boils 15 feet high, this 50-mile stretch of rapids rages at 1.6 million cubic feet per second... Fisher says he’s proud but humbled by the accomplishment. “We didn’t conquer the rapids. We survived them.”

"Men beat traffic with kayaks" (Newark, NJ)
"A pair of New Jersey men said they have found a way to beat the traffic and tolls of their daily commute to New York -- traveling via kayak. Zach Schwitzky and Erik David Barber said the daily commutes to their Manhattan office in their kayaks have saved them money on gas and tolls and increased their amount of daily exercise. "We wanted to do something that was a little more eco-friendly and we said, you know what? We love the outdoors. We love to kayak. Why is it out of the question to kayak to work? And a light kind of went off," Barber said..."

"Canoeist zapped by fence" (Waterloo, Canada)
"Jeff Ryan got the shock of his life. “I didn’t have time to react,” said the 37-year-old Waterloo man on Monday, two days after canoeing into an electric fence line hung across the Nith River. “Once we turned that corner, we came onto that fence quite quickly.” Ryan was enjoying a Saturday afternoon excursion with his fiancée Stefanie when they paddled unexpectedly into two yellow lines hung above the water. One line was about two feet over the surface. The other was two feet above that. “As soon as it hit me, the canoe flipped over and I went under the fence to try and stay clear of it and get on the other side,” Ryan said..."

"Boaters and Paddlers to Attempt a Life Jacket World Record"
(Dana Point, CA)
"On May 19 sailors and paddlers will gather at noon to attempt to set a world record for the most life jackets worn and inflatable life jackets inflated. The goal is not only to promote the comfortable and versatile options when it comes to life jackets, but also to educate the public about life jackets and safe boating in general. "Ready, Set, Wear It!" events like this are being held throughout the U.S. and Canada to kick off National Safe Boating Week, May 19-25. According to Virgil Chambers of the National Safe Boating Council, as many as 500 lives could be saved each year if boaters had worn their life jackets..."
