Bayou Greenway Day Festival on April 6 – Volunteer...
Author Last Post

The Bayou Greenway Day 2019 festival will take place on Saturday April 6 in Houston’s East End at Mason Park, 541 South 75th Street. We are looking for one or two more paddling and non-paddling volunteers to paddle safety boats, help participants fit life jackets and launch canoes, and move gear and boats a short distance between the canoe trailer and the launch site.

Bayou Preservation Association will provide canoes, PFDs, and paddles, so all you need to bring is yourself, your knowledge of canoeing, and willingness to help out. With a projected attendance of 4 to 5 thousand, parking opportunities at Mason Park will be very limited. The event’s website has more about parking and transportation options, including a free shuttle service. It may also be possible to arrange a carpool from the nearby Bayou Preservation office on Navigation Blvd. To allow time for set-up, we are being asked to arrive at Mason Park by 8:00 AM, which will mean an early start. Depending on our volunteers’ availability, we may organize one shift from 8:00 to 12:30 to cover the two morning paddles, and a second shift from 12:30 to 4:00 to cover the two afternoon paddles. We will continue to monitor weather forecasts closely and stay in touch with the festival organizers, so that we can keep volunteers updated about any possible changes.

For more information, or to volunteer, contact Tom Douglas at baymail@sbcglobal.net.

Video clips from the Great Day Houston TV show with more about the festival are available here and here.  Many thanks to Dan Roy, Harmon Everett, and Linda Shead, who paddled in the background on Brays Bayou for them.

The Bayou Greenway Day 2019 festival will take place on Saturday April 6 in Houston’s East End at Mason Park, 541 South 75th Street. Free paddling trips for the public are being organized by the Bayou Preservation Association. Paddling activities will be centered at the recently completed Mason Park Pedestrian Bridge, which is part of the Brays Bayou Greenway. We are looking for both paddling and non-paddling volunteers to paddle safety boats, help participants fit life jackets and launch their canoes, and move gear and boats a short distance between the Bayou Preservation Association’s canoe trailer and the launch site.

Because a large attendance is expected, and the number of parking spots at Mason Park is very limited, we will probably begin our day by launching our boats at another park along Brays Bayou, and paddling along the Brays Bayou Paddling Trail for about 1.4 miles to Mason Park.
