I just remembered that I did a book review on this in the past.
See here: "River Horse" - go to page 8.
He used motors, and still needed a trailer to get around dams.

One of these days, I'd like to start on the East Coast, paddle UP the Susquehanna as far west as it will go, then there is only a 50 mile portage or so, to get to the Allegheny, and follow it down to the Ohio. Down the Ohio to the Mississippi and then down to the Gulf. Or up the Mississippi to the Missouri, and up the Missouri to Three Forks, Montana. At that point, there is only another 50 mile portage to Clearwater River and thence down to the Snake, and into the Columbia, to the Pacific Coast. Who is in?
