Due to the disruption caused by Hurricane Harvey, The U.S. Forest Service has postponed the Wild and Scenic River and Wilderness meetings that were originally scheduled for September 12th in Lufkin and September 14th in San Augustine. Please stay tuned for more news.
Two meetings will be held soon by the US Forest Service to receive public input on the eligibility of East Texas rivers for Wild and Scenic River status. Several affected streams with which members of the Houston Canoe Club may be familiar include the Neches River, East Fork of the San Jacinto River, Winters Bayou, and Big Creek.
When: Tuesday, September 12
Where: Lufkin, TX - Pitser Garrison Convention Center, 601 N. 2nd St.
Focus: Davy Crockett National Forest (Neches and Trinity River watersheds)
Sam Houston National Forest (San Jacinto and Trinity River watersheds)
When: Thursday, September 14
Where: San Augustine, TX - San Augustine Chamber of Commerce, 611 W. Columbia St.
Focus: Angelina National Forest (Angelina and Neches River watersheds)
Sabine National Forest (Sabine River watershed)
At each meeting, maps and data will be available for review from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Forest Service staff will be available to answer questions, and record comments. At 6:00 p.m. there will be an information presentation on the Wild and Scenic River Eligibility Study and Wilderness Inventory, followed by a question and answer session.
