Bad news for paddlers!

At HASK's 2016 picnic, we noticed survey flags heading southward and learned the the city would be extending MLK Boulevard southward through the property to Beltway 8, so we've monitored that since then because our group uses Lake 288 for our picnic, training, and practicing. The parking and access to the lake has been moved from the west side to the east side and it is open for business with a new entrance, parking, and "launch" area. It should be usable now for indivuduals or small groups but not large groups because the launch area is small, steep, and muddy. For thise reasons HASK has decided to move the June 10 picnic to Independence Park in Missouri City. The water is not as nice as 288 but the park is good for a picnic. Y'all are welcome either as HASK members or as guests, just sign up on the HASK website. But Lake 288 is indeed open and we'll consider moving our picnic back there if they should improve the launch area.
I went down to Lake 288 for some roll practice yesterday. The "powers that be" have apparently decided to put a road right through the property. The entrance is now blocked, and the driveway alongside the lake is a hole 20' wide, 4' deep, and 1/4 mile long. I tried to call their phone number, and got no answer.

The new road/street will put the lake on one side and the parking area on the other. I don't know if the lake as we've known it will re-open, but it sure won't be anytime soon. Hooray for "progress".
