April 2 Cleanup for Future Brays Bayou Paddling Tr...
Author Last Post

On April 2, we will have an opportunity to help prepare the way for a future Paddling Trail on Brays Bayou. This will be part of the state-wide “2016 River, Lakes, Bays 'N Bayous Trash Bash” event. We will be cleaning up Kuhlman Gully, a tributary that enters Brays Bayou in Houston’s East End, near the intersection of Wheeler Street and South Wayside Drive (adjacent to Gragg Park). Several members of the Houston Canoe Club participated in an earlier cleanup there last November. The results were great, and they represented the club with distinction, but some work remains to be done.

Sign-in will begin at 8:00, with the cleanup scheduled for 8:30 to 11:00, and a free lunch for volunteers to be served at nearby Mason Park beginning at 11:30. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required, and long-sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended. Upon check-in, volunteers will be furnished with gloves, trash bags, and t-shirts. Portable toilet facilities will be available.

There are opportunities for both land-based and boat-based volunteers. Be sure to visit www.trashbash.org, select the Brays Bayou site, download a registration form, fill it out, and bring it with you. Having a completed form with you will allow you to skip the central registration table at Mason Park, and proceed directly to the actual work site at Kuhlman Gully. For directions to Kuhlman Gully, contact Amy Dinn at acdinn@gmail.com or Tom Douglas at baymail@sbcglobal.net
